Coriander – A Natural Herb with Different Health Benefits

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), an annual herb of the Apiaceae family, originated from the Mediterranean and is native to regions of Southern and Eastern Europe, North Africa and Asia. This plant is mainly cultivated for its fresh leaves and seeds, which are widely used for food, drugs, perfumes, and cosmetics. Coriander, commonly known as Dhaniya in the Indian Subcontinent. It is an important spice crop having a prime position in flavouring food. All parts of the plant are edible, but the fresh leaves and the dried seeds are the parts most traditionally used in cooking.

The young plant is used for flavouring and garnishing curries and soups. The seeds are widely used as condiments with or without roasting in the preparation of curry powders, sausages, and seasonings. It is an important ingredient in the manufacture of food flavourings, in bakery products, meat products, soda & syrups, puddings, candy preserves, and liquors. In medicines, it is used as a carminative, refrigerant, diuretic, and aphrodisiac. In household medicines, it is used against seasonal fever, stomach disorders, and nausea. Coriander oil and oleoresins are primarily used in seasonings for sausages and other meat products.

Flavour

The seeds are warm, mild and sweetish. There is a citrus undertone similar to orange peel. The leaves combine well with many pungent dishes from India.

1. Treats Skin Disorders: The disinfectant, detoxifying, antiseptic, antifungal and antioxidant properties of coriander are ideal for clearing up skin disorders such as eczema, dryness and fungal infections.

Lower Cholesterol Levels: The acids present in cilantro, like linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) are very effective in reducing cholesterol levels in the blood. 3. Treats Diarrhea: The components of essential oils found in cilantro such as borneol and linalool, aid in digestion, proper functioning of the liver and bonding of bowels, while also helping to reduce diarrhea.

4. Regulate Blood Pressure: Consuming Coriandrum sativum has been shown to positively reduce blood pressure in many patients suffering from hypertension. It enhances the interaction of calcium ions and acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the peripheral and central nervous system, relaxes blood vessel tension; thereby reducing the chances of a number of cardiovascular conditions, including heart attacks and strokes.

5. Prevent Anemia: It is high in iron content, which directly helps people who suffer from anemia. Low iron content in the blood can result in shortness of breath, heart palpitations, extreme fatigue, and a decrease in cognitive functions.
