It is well known that Indian Spices like pepper, cardamom, fenugreek, and cumin are finding their way into Chinese cuisine. Marie Cho, a 30-year-old Hong Kong-based Homemaker is familiar to India by its three assets – Aamir Khan, The Taj and Indian Spices.

Most of the people in the Hong Kong have got Indian Spices in their taste buds. Cardamom, pepper and other condiments imported from India are key ingredients of the local cuisine. “Small cardamon is the principle ingredient in my food now,” said Marie Cho. She first learned about Indian Spices while visiting an Indian Restaurant in Hong Kong from where she still recalls the taste of Daal Makhani and seekh kebab. Then she tried cooking those dishes at home and realized that Indian Pepper and cumin she was using could be a party of her Cantonese dishes, too.

India is amongst top producers, consumers and spice exporters in the world. Because of varied agro-climatic conditions and soil types, over 60 varieties of spices grow in this country. About 6.9 lakh metric tonnes of spices from India are exported to overseas.

Some of the local entrepreneurs of China uses Indian black pepper in any local dishes as it gives dimsums extra zing. Not only taste but Indian spices are also popular because if their medicinal effects. Turmeric, especially, is gaining attention for health reasons. About 83% of Hong Kong’s imports of turmeric as it comes with anti-inflammatory benefits from India. Nutmeg, mace, and cardamon have shown the marked rise in the Hong Kong market. Imports from India grew by 50% in the first six months of 2017 according to the data provided by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council show.

Pepper is much used in restaurants and street food in Hong Kong and the pepper imports went by 113.3%. Peking Dumpling, a popular restaurant inhume Kong uses Indian Spices in their sauces and allow customers to try out various flavors of Spices. Saffron, black pepper and cumin stand upfront to bring aromatic taste in those sauces.

Not only taste and aroma but Indian Spices are also preferred because they minimize the exposure to chemical content. That’s what make local people more excited to know about these spice more and more. The other factor that is giving hike to Indian Spices demand in Hong¬† Kong is the interest of people to explore international cuisine.
